H-Town lead singer Dino dies in car crash

Mississippi native - AndreusH-Town lead singer Keven 'Dino' Conner, the first R&B group signed to Miami rapper Luke Campbell's Luke Records, died last Tuesday (Jan 28th) in an automobile accident. He was 28 years old. Houston police reported that a sports utility vehicle struck a car driven by Teshya Rae Weisent, 22, in which Conner was a passenger. Conner's twin brother and bandmate, Shazam Conner, said Weisent had just picked Dino Conner up from his recording studio. The SUV allegedly ran a red light and struck the vehicle, throwing Conner and Weisent from the car. Conner died en route to the hospital while Weisent died at the scene.

It was in 94 that H-Town hit it big with their mega-hit 'Knockin' Da Boots' a tern now infamous for making love and were in the process of reuniting H-Town. Those plans are now on hold after Conner's death said brother Shazam Conner "We had basically just finished recording our new album and were getting ready for an H-Town reunion tour, We really haven't had time to think about what will happen now". February is Black History (and music) month

In case you weren't aware, February is the American Black History month and also Black Music month. African Americans throughout the United States observe this month as a time to relfect on their history and what their fore fathers (and ours for that matter) went through in their lifetimes.

Television and radio will also be in observance of Black History month with special programming and shows throughout the month. Cable TV station VH1 will be running a series of specials highlighting the black music experience including 'Grooves Weekend - The roots of Black Music History' (which premiered this past weekend) and the Independant Film Channel (IFC) will be showing a series in film throughout the month called 'Black Ass Cinema' focusing on the Blackplotation movies of the 70s to current day movies.

I'm sure that most of us will do our part in remembrance to our fallen fore-fathers and also help in preserving the future of our freedom in making sure we can move forward as the saying goes 'can we all get along'.

Aretha Franklin supeonaed in arsonist investigation

Stereolab Authorities in suburban Detroit served the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin with an investigative subpoena on Thursday (January 30) regarding the October 25 arson fire that destroyed one of her homes. The Oakland County (Michigan) prosecutor's office issued the subpoenas to Franklin, her son Edward Franklin, his roommate Dr. Edward West, and security guard Tyrone Jarrett Sr.

Franklin's attorney Elbert Hatchett accepted Franklin's subpoena on the singer's behalf and said that Franklin would "respond to this subpoena according to its dictates and the Constitution." She has one week to respond.

Prosecutors have complained that Franklin has been uncooperative since the fire burned down the 10-bedroom, $1.6 million home in Bloomfield Township, a suburb northeast of Detroit. Requesting the subpoenas from Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Deborah Tyner on Thursday, they detailed their attempts to contact Franklin on the matter, including twice on the day of the fire--when she was performing in Houston and was "too tired" to talk to investigators, according to Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca. They also tried on December 9, 10, and 16, but were only able to ask questions via Hatchett.

"We were forced into'' requesting the subpoenas, Gorcyca said at a press conference Thursday. "All of this could have been avoided with Ms. Franklin's voluntary cooperation." Tyner even asked the prosecutors to call Franklin's attorney once more before she issued the subpoenas.

Gorcyca's office has maintained that Franklin is not a suspect in the blaze, which was ruled an arson last month when investigators found accelerant in three different locations within the house. Jarrett, the security guard, is a former policeman with an extensive background in arson investigation who had been hired by Franklin a week before the fire.
