Online radio stations 'close shop' in protest

Literally hundreds of online radio stations closed shop last Wednesday (May 1st) in protest of a recently proposed royalty rate. In the "Day of Silence." some stations stopped their broadcasts all day, while others stayed silent for half a day. Many of those that did not shut down aired a 12-hour talk show informing listeners about the new rate plan, which would require webcasters to pay a fee to record labels and artists in addition to the one they (the station), as well as conventional stations, already pay out to songwriters and publishers through organizations like ASCAP and BMI.

The rate, proposed by the Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel in February, would require stations that broadcast exclusively over the Web to pay 0.14 cents per listener per song, while conventional stations that stream their broadcast online would pay a rate of 0.07 cents. If enacted into law, the additional fees would be retroactive to October 1998 and could force many online stations to shut down. Webcasters contend that the rate should be set as a percentage of their revenue, not based on the size of their audience. If you would like to participate in this protest please visit

Lisa 'Left-Eye' Lopez is buried in Atlanta

The body of the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was taken from Honduras to  her home in Atlanta last Monday (April 29). There was a memorial on  Wednesday in Atlanta for the pop star's loved ones, and her funeral was  held on Thursday in the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia, at 11 a.m. A spokesperson for the church said the funeral the funeral was open to the public who paid their respects to the late star.

Lisa was killed on Thursday (April 25th) in Honduras when the SUV she was driving flipped over and suffered fatal head trauma. Eight others were in the vehicle with her and all were rushed to the hospital. Half of them were released while the other four remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Lopes' mother,
Wanda Lopes, and her family released a statement through the group's manager Bill Diggins expressing heartfelt thanks to the thousands of fans that have sent messages of condolences to them at this tragic time.

Smith & Mighty tells you 'Life is.....'

Smith and Mighty returns after a 2 year hiatus with the latest album 'Life is' their latest adventure into the world of Drum 'n' Bass/Dub wise. The album released on their More Rockers label has all the traits that we've come to love from Smith and Mighty thumping bass line wicked lyrics and a host of guest artists including Shantal, Hazel Jane, MC Bunx, Tammy Payne and Caroline

The lead off single is 'Life has a way' the combination of drum and bass and dub present but it has a more soulful feel on this one compared to those of past offerings. This will make it's way to a radio station near you. Other notables are the B-sided B-Line Fi Blow Sea, Rise, Flash of Joy and Run com. Available in their native UK and Europe but not yet on American shores. Keep you posted

Will Downing takes you on a 'Sensual Journey'

I feel that Will Downing never really got the props he so richly deserved. His last release 'All the man you need' was a delightful set (which I loved) but never made any noise in the stores (sales wise). With this in mind we come to his latest effort 'Sensual Journey' and again he has mastered the craft of harmony and delivery .

On display are five fine cover versions of some classic soul tracks 'Just Don't Want To Be Lonely' (Main Ingredient), 'Drowning In Your Eyes' (the late Ephraim Lewis), 'Brooklyn Breezes' (Kashif), 'If I Ever Lose This Heaven' (Quincy Jones and others) and a really nice version of 'I Can't Help It' (Michael Jackson from the 'Off The Wall' album).

The rest of the album carry some weight of  high quality. 'Almost Like Being In  Love', (co-penned by Armsted Christian) is an excellent track that can really grab you. 'Maybe' is a drop dead ballad, that will receive extensive airplay on any 'quiet storm' radio stations, whilst 'Don't Talk To Me Like That' and 'Home' are a real treat. A very nice set indeed do check it out
