Dallas native N'Dambi
is a class act, a singer and songwriter of the highest caliber and
an all round beautiful person. She's been singing all her life and
upon meeting Erykah Badu when
they were younger, they made a promise to each other that was kept
(a rarity in this industry) once one or the other made it first. After
paying her dues as a background singer for Erykah,
N'Dambi ventured out as a solo
artist releasing the excelient 'Little Girl
Lost Blues' in 1999 followed by her sophomore effort Tunin
up and Cosignin. She recently took time out of her busy
schedule to answer some of our questions. (interviewed by Angharad
Williams)
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to be here. I'm a
huge fan
N'Dambi:
Angharad: You grew up singing
at your parents church and your father even had aspirations for you
to sing country at a young age (still trying to imagine you being
a country singer). Did you know then that you wanted to be a singer
or were you following dad's direction?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Did you enter any talent competitions as a child and if so what was
the experience like for you?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
How did you and Erykah Badu (then
Erika Wright) meet?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
You became best friends very quickly and made a promise to each other
that whom ever made it first would help the other get their career
off the ground. Seeing that Erykah made it first, did you have any
doubt that she'd keep that promise?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
How did you land with Cheekyi?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Your name is very unique any specific reason for choosing the 'Most
Beautiful' one?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Your songs are full of passion and life as well as social consciousness
and awareness. Where do you draw your inspiration for songwriting?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
What's more important to you - for you to sell a million copies of
an album you were not happy with or have an album that you're happy
with but didn't fair well?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Which do you prefer to do, singing live on tour in front of thousands
and thousands of screaming fans or being in the studio on a one on
one basis?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
'Tunin up and Cosignin', was released
in 2001, are you working on a 3rd album and if so when is it due?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
As an singer, who were your inspirations and who do you admire both
in and out of the industry?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Who would you like to collaborate or work with in the industry?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Erykah has dabbled into acting, do you have any inspirations to act
as well?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
What's in your CD player at the moment?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
What advice can you give a youngster aiming to take on the career
of a singer?
N'Dambi:
Angharad:
Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans?
